Buying your first Porsche

Choose the right line, generation and model, price it with real sales, inspect it properly and buy it safely.

Buying your first Porsche

Why a Porsche

Most sports cars are built to be exciting for a test drive. Porsches are built to be driven for years: they start every morning, they handle a track day and drive home, and they keep a larger share of their value than almost anything else with the same performance. That combination is why so many people who buy one never go back.

It also means the used market is deep. You can buy a Porsche for the price of a new family car or for the price of a house, and at every level there is a right car and a wrong one. This course shows you how to tell them apart.

New or used

A new Porsche lets you choose every option, but you pay for all of them and take the first years of depreciation. A two- to five-year-old car has usually lost the most it will lose, still has modern technology, and may still have Porsche warranty left. Older cars cost less to buy but more to look after, and their condition varies far more, so the inspection matters more.

For most first-time buyers, a well-documented car that is a few years old is the best value. For collectors, the opposite can be true: the right air-cooled car or GT model has often gained value.

Manual or PDK

PDK, Porsche's dual-clutch gearbox, is faster and easier in traffic. A manual is more involving, and on many models since the 997 it holds more value; on GT cars and sports-purpose models the gap can be large. Check what the same model actually sells for with each gearbox on 911 Tracker before you decide, because the answer changes from model to model.

Coupe, Targa or Cabriolet

Coupes are the stiffest, lightest and usually the most valuable. Cabriolets are the most fun on a summer evening and usually the cheapest of the three. Targas sit in between, with a look many people love. Rear-drive or all-wheel drive is the other choice: all-wheel drive suits bad weather; rear-drive is lighter and is what most enthusiasts look for.

What it really costs

The price is only part of it. Add sales tax and registration, shipping if the car is not local, a pre-purchase inspection, insurance, tires and the first year of maintenance. Then keep a reserve for what the inspection finds; we suggest 10 to 15% of the price on an older car. The calculator below adds it all up.

Choose your Porsche

Pick a model line. Each one opens its generations, and each generation opens every model, with what it really sells for and what to check.

Find your Porsche

Find your Porsche

Set your budget and what matters. Every model shown sold for a median at or under your budget in the last 24 months on 911 Tracker.

The finder uses 911 Tracker sales, so it covers the 911, Boxster, Cayman and hypercars. For the Cayenne, Panamera, Macan and Taycan, open their guides.

What each line costs

The range of median sale prices across each line's models, last 24 months, models with 5 or more sales. As of Oct 30, 2026.

The pre-purchase inspection

How we inspect every Porsche before we buy one. Use the same steps wherever you buy.

  1. VIN, history and build

Decode the VIN, match the build sheet and options, read every service record and the history report.

  2. Factory scan

Read every control unit with Porsche PIWIS: stored faults and, on manual cars, the over-rev history.

  3. Engine health

Compression and leak-down on older engines, a borescope where the model calls for it, oil checked for metal.

  4. On the lift

Leaks, coolant pipes and hoses, mounts, bushings, brakes, tires and any sign of accident repair.

  5. Road test

Cold start, clutch or PDK behaviour, gear changes, brakes and noises at speed.

The buying process

  1. Find and price it

Compare the car with what the same model actually sold for, adjusted for miles, options and records.

  2. Ask the right questions

Who serviced it, why it is for sale, any accidents or paintwork, and can you see every record before you travel.

  3. Inspect it

A specialist pre-purchase inspection, paid by you, reported to you.

  4. Agree the deal

Price, what is fixed before delivery, deposit terms and a written bill of sale.

  5. Pay safely and ship it

Wire only to a verified account, never on instructions that arrive by email alone. Ship enclosed for anything rare or valuable.
