Questions

About the VIN decoder

Where do I find my VIN?

On the driver-side corner of the dashboard (read it through the windshield), on the sticker in the driver door jamb, and on your title, registration and insurance card. It is 17 characters, with no letters I, O or Q.

Can I scan my VIN with my phone?

Yes. Tap "Scan with camera" and point it at the barcode on the door-jamb sticker, or tap "Photo of VIN" and take a clear, straight-on picture of the VIN plate. Then check the result before you decode.

What does the decoder show?

For any car: year, make, model, trim, body, engine, transmission, drive, where it was built and more, from the U.S. government (NHTSA) VIN database. For Porsche GT and Turbo cars on 911 Tracker: the exact car's build date and number, paint, interior, factory options with price new, original sticker and every sale we have recorded.

Does it show how many were made?

For the GT and Turbo models we track, yes: US-market and worldwide production counts with their sources, and for many cars the build number within its model year. "How rare is it?" also counts how many cars with the same year, gearbox, paint and uncommon options are in our database, so you can see if yours is the only one we have recorded. Those counts are our tracked cars, not factory totals.

Do I need an account?

Yes, a free 911 Buyers membership. Sign in with Google or an email link; it is the same account as hbiauto.com. We save the VINs you decode to your account so we can tell you about your car's market.

Vehicle details for all makes come from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vPIC database. Porsche build details, options and sales come from 911 Tracker. Production counts show their source.
