Chapter 1 · Buying your first Porsche · by HBi Auto
Buying a Cayenne
Porsche's SUV since 2003: 955/957, 958 and the current 9Y0.

The Cayenne is the Porsche that made Porsche a big company. It is a genuinely fast SUV with real towing ability, sold in every form from V6 to Turbo GT and plug-in hybrid.
Used Cayennes are some of the best-value Porsches you can buy, but they are heavy, complex cars and maintenance history matters a lot.
911 Tracker does not follow the Cayenne yet, so this page has no market numbers. HBi Auto can price one for you directly.
955 / 957 (2003–2010)
The first Cayenne, with V6, V8 and Turbo engines and real off-road hardware. The 957 update (2008) added direct injection.

What to look for
Coolant pipes
Plastic coolant pipes in the V8's engine valley are a known failure; ask whether they were replaced with metal ones.
Driveshaft and transfer case
Listen for clunks and check for vibration.
Air suspension
Check it holds height overnight.
Maintenance
We have not found a factory maintenance schedule for these cars that we can verify, so we do not print one. Older Porsches are best serviced on time rather than on miles: oil and brake fluid at least every year or two, and a specialist inspection every year.
958 (2011–2018)
Lighter and much more refined, with the first S E-Hybrid. A strong used buy.
- Engines
- V6, V8, twin-turbo V8, hybrid, diesel
- Buy for
- Modern feel at a used price
What to look for
Air suspension
Check every height setting.
Hybrid battery
On hybrids, check battery health with a factory scan.

Cayenne (958), 2011–2018: what is done, version by version
Not verified yet: Transmission, transfer case and differential oils (one magazine says 160,000 mi; not confirmed); Cabin filter interval.
Confidence: Low-medium. Sources: 1.
Intervals are whichever comes first, miles or years. "Porsche factory (converted from km)" means Porsche's own figure for another market, turned into miles with the same km-to-mile pairing Porsche uses in the US. Your car's own maintenance booklet is the final word. HBi Auto's recommendations for cars that are tracked, driven hard or stored are being added by our service team.
9Y0 (2019 on)
The current Cayenne, with the Coupe body from 2020, the Turbo GT and a 2024 update.

The pre-purchase inspection
How we inspect every Cayenne before we buy one. Use the same steps wherever you buy.
VIN, history and build
Decode the VIN, match the build sheet and options, read every service record and the history report.
Factory scan
Read every control unit with Porsche PIWIS: stored faults and, on manual cars, the over-rev history.
Engine health
Compression and leak-down on older engines, a borescope where the model calls for it, oil checked for metal.
On the lift
Leaks, coolant pipes and hoses, mounts, bushings, brakes, tires and any sign of accident repair.
Road test
Cold start, clutch or PDK behaviour, gear changes, brakes and noises at speed.
