Porsche 991 Carrera S, T and GTS buyer's guide

Porsche 991 Carrera S, T and GTS buyer's guide

The 991.1 Carrera S and GTS (2012 to 2016) are the last naturally aspirated Carreras; the 991.2 (2017 to 2019) moved to a 3.0 L twin-turbo engine and added the lightweight Carrera T. Manual and PDK were offered on both. The engine change is the big decision here.

How to choose

Buy a 991.1 for the naturally aspirated sound and response; buy a 991.2 for more torque and a more modern feel. The GTS is the most performance-focused Carrera of each generation; the Carrera T is a lighter, simpler take on the 991.2 Carrera.

Across the 115 cars in this guide whose gearbox we know: Manual 40 (35%), PDK 75 (65%), as of Oct 20, 2026.

Known problems to check

Model-specific issues documented by specialists. None of them means a car is bad; each one is a question to answer before you pay.

  • Front radiators and condensers

Road debris collects in the front radiators and A/C condensers on 991s. Look behind the front grilles.

  • PDK or manual

On PDK cars check the service history and smooth low-speed shifts; on manuals, the clutch.

Checks for every car

  • Records and ownership

A continuous service history from a Porsche dealer or a known specialist, and a clean title. Gaps in the records are worth a price conversation, not just a question.

  • VIN, options and window sticker

Match the VIN to the car, the title and the build record. Options are claimed wrongly more often than you might think; decode the VIN before you pay for them.

  • Over-rev report (manual cars)

The engine computer on these cars counts over-rev events by range. A Porsche dealer or specialist can read them with a factory scan tool; higher ranges deserve an explanation.

  • Leaks, brakes, tires

Look under the car for oil and coolant. Measure pads and rotors (carbon-ceramic rotors are expensive), and check tire date codes, not just tread.

  • A specialist pre-purchase inspection

Have a Porsche specialist inspect the car before you commit, ideally with a leak-down or compression test on older engines. It is the cheapest insurance in the hobby.
