Buying a Porsche 997.2 GT3
What it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and the maintenance it needs.

The 997.2 GT3 is part of the 997 generation (2005–2012). Porsche built about 2,256 worldwide, 654 of them for the US. This lesson covers what it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and how to look after it.

What to look for
Coolant pipe fittings (glued/bonded) pulling out
The GT1-derived Mezger engine's coolant manifolds use aluminium pipes bonded into cast housings; after many heat cycles (especially track use) the adhesive can let go and a pipe can pull out, dumping coolant, sometimes onto the rear tyres. Applies to 2010+ GT3 (Shark Werks lists the 997.2 GT3, RS, RS 4.0 and GT2 RS). From the 911 Buyers shop: this is mainly a concern on cars tracked hard for long sessions; we don't see it fail often on cars driven on the road. Pinned pipes are still a plus when you buy or sell.
What fixes it: Pipes pinned (or re-bonded/welded) in the housings; normally an engine-out job, often combined with clutch/other work.
Front-axle lift system faults
The optional 997.2 GT3/RS front-axle lift can malfunction, usually traced to a faulty pressure switch; some owners replaced the switch more than once.
What fixes it: Replace the pressure switch (or other faulty lift component).
LED taillight condensation/failure
997.2 LED rear lamps can let moisture in and fog, and LED units can fail; repair attempts are generally unsuccessful.
What fixes it: Replace the light unit.
Limited-slip differential wear
The mechanical LSD wears with use; a worn unit may no longer lock up properly (noted on lift-off).
What fixes it: Rebuild or replace with OEM or a stronger aftermarket unit.
Carbon-ceramic (PCCB) rotor wear/cracking
PCCB discs (optional) are condemned for chips, cracks or small amounts of wear; replacement is very expensive, and many cars have been converted to steel. Mostly a concern on tracked cars.
What fixes it: Inspect rotors (and pad thickness) before purchase; replace damaged rotors, or convert to iron rotors.
IMS bearing (997.1)
Still present on the M97, but the larger bearing fails far less often than on the 996. It cannot be replaced without opening the engine.
Bore scoring (997.1)
More common on the 3.8 S. A borescope is the only way to know before you buy.
Coolant pipes and radiators
Same front radiators as the 996; check for debris and leaks.
PDK (997.2)
Reliable; check the software and that the fluid was done on schedule.

Intervals are whichever comes first, miles or years. "Porsche factory (converted from km)" means Porsche's own figure for another market, turned into miles with the same km-to-mile pairing Porsche uses in the US.
