What it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and the maintenance it needs.

Buying a Porsche 996.2 GT3

The 996.2 GT3 is part of the 996 generation (1999–2005). Porsche built about 2,313 worldwide, 801 of them for the US. This lesson covers what it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and how to look after it.

  • First GT3 sold in the US (2004-05 model years)
  • 380 hp (US rating) and 8,200 rpm redline from the Mezger 3.6
  • PCCB ceramic brakes offered as an option for the first time on the GT3

What to look for

  • Coolant pipe fittings (glued/bonded) pulling out

The GT1-derived Mezger engine's coolant manifolds use aluminium pipes bonded into cast housings; after many heat cycles (especially track use) the adhesive can let go and a pipe can pull out, dumping coolant, sometimes onto the rear tyres. Applies to 996 GT3 Mk2 (all Mezger GT/Turbo engines). A failure at speed can spill coolant under and around the car. From the 911 Buyers shop: this is mainly a concern on cars tracked hard for long sessions; we don't see it fail often on cars driven on the road. Pinned pipes are still a plus when you buy or sell.

What fixes it: Pipes pinned (or re-bonded/welded) in the housings; normally an engine-out job, often combined with clutch/other work.

  • Dual-mass flywheel wear

Non-RS GT3s use a dual-mass flywheel; a worn unit shows as free play felt during light acceleration and deceleration.

What fixes it: Replace the flywheel whenever the clutch is replaced.

  • Rear main seal leak

RMS leaks are a common discussion point; a few cars leaked from the factory early on.

What fixes it: Replace the seal (gearbox-out), ideally with the clutch.

  • Carbon-ceramic (PCCB) rotor wear/cracking

PCCB discs (optional) are condemned for chips, cracks or small amounts of wear; replacement is very expensive, and many cars have been converted to steel. Mostly a concern on tracked cars.

What fixes it: Inspect rotors (and pad thickness) before purchase; replace damaged rotors, or convert to iron rotors.

  • IMS bearing (Carrera)

The intermediate-shaft bearing on M96 engines can fail without warning. Many have been upgraded; ask for the invoice. Mezger cars do not have this problem.

  • Rear main seal

An oil leak between engine and gearbox. Common; often done together with the IMS and clutch.

  • Bore scoring

Scored cylinder walls on higher-mile engines. A borescope inspection settles it.

  • Coolant system

Radiators behind the front bumper collect debris and corrode; check them and the expansion tank.

Intervals are whichever comes first, miles or years. "Porsche factory (converted from km)" means Porsche's own figure for another market, turned into miles with the same km-to-mile pairing Porsche uses in the US.
