Buying a Porsche 996.2 GT3 RS
What it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and the maintenance it needs.

The 996.2 GT3 RS is part of the 996 generation (1999–2005). Porsche built about 682 worldwide. This lesson covers what it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and how to look after it.
- Homologation base for the 996 GT3 RSR race car
- Lighter than the GT3: carbon bonnet and rear wing, plastic rear window, single-mass flywheel

What to pay
Only 2 sold in the last 24 months, too few to quote a median; use the chart below and price the car on its own history.
911 Tracker, VIN-checked US sales, as of Oct 30, 2026. Medians need 5 or more sales.
What to look for
Coolant pipe fittings (glued/bonded) pulling out
The GT1-derived Mezger engine's coolant manifolds use aluminium pipes bonded into cast housings; after many heat cycles (especially track use) the adhesive can let go and a pipe can pull out, dumping coolant, sometimes onto the rear tyres. Applies to 996 GT3 RS (Mezger GT1-block engines). Cost not stated by this source. From the 911 Buyers shop: this is mainly a concern on cars tracked hard for long sessions; we don't see it fail often on cars driven on the road. Pinned pipes are still a plus when you buy or sell.
What fixes it: Pipes pinned (or re-bonded/welded) in the housings; normally an engine-out job, often combined with clutch/other work.
Rear main seal leak
RMS leaks are widely discussed on 996 GT3s; a few left the factory leaking.
What fixes it: Replace the seal (gearbox-out), ideally with the clutch.
Cam timing actuator wear (tracked cars)
Excess valvetrain noise on hard-tracked 996 GT3s is linked to worn cam timing actuators.
What fixes it: Replace actuators; the cited specialist recommends a rebuild if needed.
IMS bearing (Carrera)
The intermediate-shaft bearing on M96 engines can fail without warning. Many have been upgraded; ask for the invoice. Mezger cars do not have this problem.
Rear main seal
An oil leak between engine and gearbox. Common; often done together with the IMS and clutch.
Bore scoring
Scored cylinder walls on higher-mile engines. A borescope inspection settles it.
Coolant system
Radiators behind the front bumper collect debris and corrode; check them and the expansion tank.
Maintenance schedule
Maintenance planner
Pick the car, enter its miles and model year: the planner shows what is due now, the next services and the full schedule, whichever comes first, miles or years.

Intervals are whichever comes first, miles or years. "Porsche factory (converted from km)" means Porsche's own figure for another market, turned into miles with the same km-to-mile pairing Porsche uses in the US.
