Chapter 1 · Porsche 911 · by HBi Auto
Buying a Porsche 993 (1994–1998)
The 993 is the last air-cooled 911 and, for many people, the best-looking one.

The 993 is the last air-cooled 911 and, for many people, the best-looking one. It added a multi-link rear suspension that cured the old 911's twitchy handling, a six-speed manual, and from 1996 the VarioRam intake. The 993 Turbo was the first 911 Turbo with two turbochargers and all-wheel drive.
Values reflect all of that. Clean, documented 993s are among the strongest air-cooled 911s in the market.

What to look for
Secondary air injection
Clogged ports set a check-engine light and can be expensive to clear. Ask whether it has been done.
Valve guides
Higher-mile engines can wear valve guides; a leak-down test and oil-use history tell you.
Oil leaks
Common and usually manageable; price them in.
Maintenance schedule
We have not found a factory maintenance schedule for these cars that we can verify, so we do not print one. Older Porsches are best serviced on time rather than on miles: oil and brake fluid at least every year or two, and a specialist inspection every year.
The 111-point checklist: 993
HBi Auto's full 111-point inspection, the same list our technicians sign on every car we certify. Tick as you go; your ticks stay on this device. Print it, or download the blank form (PDF) and take it to your inspection.
