Buying a Porsche 964 RS America

The 964 RS America is part of the 964 generation (1989–1994). Porsche built about 701 worldwide, 701 of them for the US. This lesson covers what it really sells for, what moves the price, what to check and how to look after it.

What to look for

  • Oil leaks

Cylinder-base and chain-cover leaks are common; budget for them if the car has not been resealed.

  • Dual-mass flywheel

Rattles at idle mean it is worn. Many have been replaced with a single-mass conversion.

  • Ignition

The twin-plug ignition has a distributor belt that should be renewed on a schedule.

Maintenance schedule

We have not found a factory maintenance schedule for these cars that we can verify, so we do not print one. Older Porsches are best serviced on time rather than on miles: oil and brake fluid at least every year or two, and a specialist inspection every year.
